No, your friend is not lying! You just have change your phone facebook settings to get notifications.
1-Log into your Facebook account on your Blackberry
2-Click on the menu button(The one on the left of the trackpad)
3-Click on "Options"
4-Scroll down to "Facebook Notifications" Check the box next to it. If the box is unchecked, you will not be able to receive any notifications.
5-Click the meny key again and click "Save"
