They primarily earn money through ad revenue. Look at your Facebook page, you'll see a sponsored ad on the right side. That space was paid for by the person or organization running the ad. It's the way in which most internet companies (including Google) earn the majority of their revenue. Facebook also makes a small amount of revenue through the sales of virtual gifts.

They expect to turn a profit this year. Their earnings are generated by advertising, but so far they've grown by investments from Digital Sky and Microsoft.
