I have created a facebook group called 'Facebook To Send Out Birthday Cards' here:

It hasnt got many fans so how could i generate more??

Give up.
Make one about Waffles. That would get more fans.

Well, you can post a question saying "how can i get more fans on my facebook group" with the first letter of every word capitalized, and then maybe, just maybe, people like me will join :]

Invite friends, and then ask friends to invite their friends, and then they will invite friends and more friends and people will join!

well, making publicity here is a good start, just invite all your friends and the more people join the more people will join, give it some time, you can't expect to get thousands of fans in a day

Firstly, get a better group. It needs to be something catchy or something people go OMG i do that, or OMG I LOVE THEM/THAT. Then invite all your friends and tell them to invite their friends. Atm on Facebook the new layout is even easier to join GOOD groups because if your friend joins, you're more likely to join and so on..
