I am trying to understand the impact of social links on SEO. there so many posts which never get traction, is it worth the effort? do these help in ranking.

In your case it wont, but traffic from social networking sites do impact SEO. In fact largest search engine considers 5% of website traffic from social sites as a positive SEO factor.
