I currently have a Mac Book Pro '09. It needs the latest software and a battery change. The computer itself is becoming kind of run down and will start to need more and more maintenance. I am a big fan of Apple Products, and if it comes down to it I may decide to just get a new computer. I enjoy the pro, I use it for leisure and work. I do a lot of work on photo and video editing programs, and I also like to use my computer to watch DVDs and derp around on social media. I know the Mac Book Air does not have a spot for disks and the most recent Mac Book Pro does not either. Which product, preferably as recent as possible, do you think would suit me best? I feel it would be cheaper to just get a new computer rather than to keep paying for different maintenance on the computer I have now.

Why would you buy a computer that's worth 500$ for 1000$?

You may be looking at a windows system if you purchase new.
You can also use external dvid/cd drive on a new system which would allow you to purchase a new MBP. Just beef up the MBP in my opinion...anything that will increase processing of data from and to and external dvd/cd.
I'll need to research the last MBP 15" with a drive but I think at the moment it was 2012. I'll post back.
The Mid 2012 without retina display is the last MBP 15" with a cd/dvd drive. See link and near the bottom of the specs. Also if you purchased used, you may want to check what apps are supposed to be on the system. Don't forget about OS and any possible booting options you may want AND you will need the ADMIN password with which the system was setup.

If you have money tied up in software and you want to stay in a Mac environment, there's a really good option.
Go to Apple's refurbished corner of their online store and buy a MBP with a Superdrive, with the highest specs you can afford. You still get a computer with the standard Apple warranty at up to a 25% discount over current models.
