I somehow got to know his password and he doesn't know that yet.
Would it be fair if I just have a look of his inbox without letting him know?
Or should I just tell him.

No, it's not ok for you to check his inbox, whether it's facebook or personal email or anything that he has a personal password for.
You somehow got to know his password --> well somehow forget it.
He is entitled to privacy and you must respect this. TRUST is a major part of a relationship. If you can't trust him and must snoop, then this says you shouldn't be together.
