What to major in for non-profit or social work? - ashton - 03-27-2014 04:49 AM I am a college freshman and I want to one day work for a non-profit (something involving children)) and I want to be pretty hands-on. I don't want to be an accountant or behind-the-scenes, so I'm choosing not to major in business, despite that being many people's suggestion. I have considered minoring in business, though, simply because I might one day wish to do less on-scene work as I get older. My school does not offer social work or communication as a major or I would choose one of those. A lot of my family and close friends seem to think that sociology is not a wise choice to get a degree in, for reasons ranging from "it's too broad" to "no one even knows what that is" -_- I don't have too many options and I'm having serious trouble choosing the one that would be best for what I want to do. Thanks in advance for any info/ advice!! The majors offered at my school are: Here are the majors I can choose from: Arabic Language & Literature Art Art - Emphasis in Art Studio Art - Emphasis in Film Art Education Art Marketing Athletic Training Biology Business Adm - Accounting Business Adm - Finance Business Adm - Management Business Adm - Marketing Chemistry/Engineering - Dual Degree Chemistry Chinese Language and Literature Computer Information Systems Computer Science Criminal Justice Criminal Justice - Criminal Forensics Early Childhood Education Early Childhood / Special Education Early Childhood Care and Education English English - Concentration in Literature or Writing French Language and Literature General Studies History Human Services Delivery and Administration International Affairs Math / Engineering - Dual Degree Mathematics Middle Grades Education Music Music Education Nursing - ASN and BSN Physical Education Physical Education - Emphasis in Exercise Science Physical Education Teacher Education Physics / Engineering - Dual Degree Physics Political Science Psychology Secondary Education - English Secondary Education - History Secondary Education - Mathematics Secondary Education - Science* Spanish Language and Literature SociologyCheck mark Spanish Language and Literature Spanish with Business Emphasis And I know I asked pretty much this exact question a few days ago, but all the answers that kept coming up were spam for some reason. And I wanted to include my other major options to see if anyone saw something I didn't. But if you actually answered this question last time I posted it, thank you for your answer! There were three very helpful ones, the rest were rubbish, so I deleted the question. - b - 03-27-2014 05:01 AM sociology, psychology non-profits always need business knowledgeable people, minor in business admin - Monique - 03-27-2014 05:02 AM When I was in college, I was given advice not to get an undergraduate degree in sociology. Someone with an undergraduate degree in sociology even advised me against it.......based on the career goals I told them I had. Sociology is a very general degree. As you know, we live in a competitive job workforce......gone are the days when any college degree would be fine and employers were fine with the fact that you just had a "degree". If you only had a choice of psychology or sociology, go with psychology. You will have a better chance of finding entry level positions with a psychology in positions working with clients. |
