Another question about downloading music online.? - 206 - 03-27-2014 10:12 AM

In my country there is a website that lets people download free music, I've looking around and found out that distributing copyrighted music is illegal. So, basically this website is illegal ,right?. But the owner of this website is kind of the biggest internet provider and has huge influence on my country media. This owner literally try to block the citizens from facebook in order to promote their social network. I don't hear any artists in my country complaining about their songs being featured on this website, and they use the owner's social network. Pretty much everyone who ever use the internet in my country know the website. So what're your thought about this? Is the law about downloading music applied globally or on just a few countries? Is this website illegal?

I can not enclose the website for fear of being cut off.

As long as someone pays a royalty to the copyright holders then it's fine. The copyright holder won't mind who pays them - the user or the web host.

As a business model though it relies on selling advertising space and collecting information about you to sell on to potential advertisers. This is called "data mining" and how they make their revenues.

You don't need to name the service provider BUT YOU DO NEED TO NAME THE COUNTRY if you want a reliable answer. Some countries don't enforce copyright law the same but without a location who knows. In addition who knows if your service provider has paid for distribution rights they might be totally legit.
