What kind of education do I need to become a Social media consultant? - Mickey Yoochun - 03-27-2014 04:30 PM

I was thinking of majoring in communication and media studies. Would that be a good major to have to become a social media consultant?

That entire profession in one giant con requiring the use of no particular skill - you certainly don't need to know coding and programming.

I know a girl who does it and she got her degree in Marketing. That's a good idea because it's one of the easiest majors there is and it will be easy to maintain a high GPA.

All courses in communications and/or media studies should cover social media so you should be fine. Maybe look into what subjects you can study and see whether that major covers social media in a broad sense or allows you to explore it in depth.

My other suggestion would be to have a look at any major that includes marketing. Social media is usually apart of the digital marketing strategy for most companies, so it should naturally be included.

Social media for businesses is primarily a marketing tool, so I'd definitely look at centering your studies in this area. This will help you get a grasp of the basic principles of marketing, and more than likely go into the fundamentals of social media management.

Failing this, there are tonnes of intensive short courses out there that will provide you with in-depth training in social media, and could lead to career paths in community management and consulting.
