I do not know of any top companies that don't spend on advertising. Even companies that sell to other businesses (B2B) spend money on advertising. If you just type in "starbucks" into Google search, you will see that there is an advertisement for Starbucks on the top or side of the page which they pay for each time someone clicks on them.

Even having a Facebook or Twitter account is a form of advertising for companies.

Even a notoriously cheap company like Ryanair which uses controversial comments to generate free publicity on a "slow day" uses advertising. Companies always need awareness-raising campaigns so potential customers know about them.
