It allows me to explore through the entire site, but when I click on the "join group" icon it won't do anything. I am supposed to join because it gives us news and info pertaining to my major.

Well when you first try to access the university facebook site then you should be asked for your school email address. If for some reason this is not coming up then there is an error on your university's facebook group. You can contact the moderators of facebook and they can assist you a bit farther.
