Business field or Social Science? - jrzmommy - 04-01-2014 03:56 PM

I currently am a freshman at a 4 year university. The question I am debating is with the state of the economy would I be better off majoring in a business field such as marketing, management, finance or should I do the social science field (sociology, social work) I like both of them, but with the economy as it is even if a just start out with a job as an assistant manager in a retail store, etc Its something, I have been told a lot of people in the social science field are not even employed in their major, and I have to be able to pay back my student loans, meaning I need a degree that will pay for itself.

If you want a job right after, then yes, go for the business field. But if you want a field with meaning and is about social issues, go for social science. Or you can be a business major with a minor in social science. Depends on what you want. Personally I am sociology major and would say go for the social science field. Business is too common and fails to be have progression. Look at the economy and how these business people have ran it to the ground with greed.

There are a lot of jobs in business for graduates with BS degrees. In many social science fields, job require graduate degrees and are fewer. Economics would be a compromise as would industrial or organizational psychology. Human resources, management, and marketing all heavily use both psychology and sociology. In my MBA, four of my courses were in psychology.
