Any reply to police would be very handy for evidence. Better than relying on the memory of police conversations, that may not be needed in court for months later.

the police and the Scottish Prison Service both use social media,to catch the daft konts that boast about their crimes

Yes it's common now.. Police takes help from social media to solve cases...
