I want to be able to have a facebook for my friends and for my family. I don't want my friends to see pictures from my family nor do i want my family to see pictures from my friends. How do i separate them?

for your pictures I think you can have the option to choose specifically who you don't want looking at them, when you choose the privacy options there's private and public and another option to make it open to certain people :-)

Make lists:
http://www.facebook.com/friends/edit/
create a list
named family
add all family friends
and vise versa
