When you retweet something (RT) it means that persons tweet with their name and icon etc will appear on your list of tweets

You would use retweet when you see someone's tweet and really want all your friends (followers) to see it also. This is similar to fowarding (FWD) an email to all your friends. You can also edit the tweet before retweeting it. Twitter.com has information as to the mechanics of retweeting.
