Everytime I get a new follower, it sends an automatic direct message to them. This is because a friend of mine recently used my twitter to promote his new company and obviously set my account to do this. The messages are really annoying, how do I stop this service?

It's probably an app they installed, I don't see any part of the notifications page with that setting. Go to https://twitter.com/settings/applications and see what's there, if it is an app you can click on "Revoke Access" to disable it.
