Of late I have become more actively involved in the local railway heritage that takes place in the town next to me.
We're making pretty good money at the moment, but part of the railway's means of getting money is to have people come and ride on it, and to do that, we need to advertise a bit more. The only form of advertisement I know we do is, other than word of mouth, is Facebook, but what other ways can I advertise the railway?

Yes both old people and young kids love railways and would love to ride on it. What you have to do is to design a nice little leaflet offering local people rides on the railway for a nominal charge. Try to make some sort of special offer for families or things like two adults pay but their child under 5 yrs is free.
Then you go see a few local businesses and ask if they would sponsor your leaflet - you will eventually find one or two local businesses who will agree to pay for the leaflet to be printed and distributed in your area in return for displaying their business name on the leaflet.
Then you get it printed and find a couple of teenagers or immigrants to post this leaflets through letterboxes for a small fee.
In addition to the above, set up a website for your railway or get a friend to do it for you and then ask your local radio station to mention your website for free by way of assisting a local business.

Diversify your ads.
Put some effort into your advertisement even though it is free of charge.
Each of your ad posting can have the same title but must be different in ad content/description.
