What degree will pay off? - Kortney - 04-06-2014 10:54 PM

I was studying social media marketing awhile back and was told that a degree in that would get me nowhere. I thought that since social media is so huge right now, i could find a job in that degree in a big city like new york or los angeles. I have a huge interest in online media, specifically youtube. I have this plan (more like an idea) of getting an associates degree in marketing or something similar then look for job opening in Los Angeles that are related to youtube. I found a company there called Fullscreen that works for youtube. My friend actually used to work there a while back and said there were plenty of jobs like that around LA. She went to school for a couple years and got a degree in business then moved out to LA for a job there.
And if i can't get something related to online media, i would love to work in photography or even write for a magazine/post photos for a magazine. Like a photojournalist. Photography is more of a hobby for me but i'd like it as a career, although i doubt anything relating to that pays much, worth asking though.
So that leaves me wondering, should i get a real degree like business or something relating that will pay off? I'd want to make a least over 60 grand a year. I don't want to be stuck with some social media related degree and find out i can't get a job. I know for a fact that i want to move to Los angeles, so i'll have a little more opportunity. And please don't tell me about the economy there and how it sucks. I know it does. I have family from california. I have friends who currently live there now. But with the right degree, i should be fine. I would prefer new york, but it's just too expensive. And where I'm at now (Houston) i doubt I'll be any better off. Anyways, thanks for any info you can give me. I really appreciate it.
