My friend is a violin player, and I just glanced at her sheet music. And I saw three little hashtags in the corner. I asked her what those hashtags were, and she just looked at me like I'm an idiot. Seriously, what idiot writes hashtags on music??

It means a note is 'sharp'. Let's take the note 'C'. 'C#' means (apart from being a programming language) that you play the BLACK note, ONE TO THE RIGHT of the standard 'C' white note. Here's a nice diagram:

Notice that sharp notes (#) are always one to the RIGHT, whereas flat notes (b) are one to the LEFT. Obviously a C# is the same as a D flat. If you look at C flat though (ie the black note one to the left of white C), there isn't one. There's a gap.

They mean that the line that the "Hashtag" is on you play as a sharp not as a normal. Unless instructed otherwise.

That little 'hashtag' indicates a note that is sharp, which means a half-step higher than it would regularly be. Since there were three, your friend has to play three notes sharp each time she comes across it in her music.

Every single "Idiot" that has ever written music uses "hashtags - #" that is the international symbol for sharps. Without them and the "b" (although it is slanted) that is used to symbolize a flat, that is how you define the key that the music is written in. They have been used for that a long time before Twitter came along.

honey, you're embarrassing our generation.
The "hashtag" (actually a "sharp") means to play the note you would normally play one half-step above it.(usually the black key--for a piano) since there were three "hashtags" every time your friend sees an F, C, or a G, she will play an F#, C#, or G# unless otherwise instructed
