how do i appear offline on facebook when i am online on a smartphone. i have an android htc how do i do it from the device.

Not sure if all Facebook apps are the same on every Android device, but on mine (Xperia X10a), when I press the physical options/settings button on my phone, it brings up a menu with a "Settings" button. From there, I can click to turn Facebook chat on or off. That's the closest thing to being "offline" that I can think of.

There is a chat window on right side bottom. Open it & choose permanently offline.
