Ok 2 things, what does dm mean. And when you are following someone and they have a check by their name in a blue bubble thing what does it mean? Thanks

dm means Direct message and the blue check means that its an account of a celebrity (official account)

DM stands for "Direct Message". It's a private message that only you and the recipient can see.
The blue check is used for celebrities or generally famous people. The tick means that they have been confirmed to be the 'real' person that they say they are. This is to stop people claiming to be those people and posting things as them.
