trending means that a lot of people is talking about a certain thing. twitter can detect a phrase or phrases that an enormous amount of people are tweeting and put it on the trending list. hope this help.

When something is trending on twitter it means that a lot of people are talking about the same thing. For example it will look something like this #potterliveson. If a lot of people tweet with this phrase #potterliveson than that phrase becomes trending on twitter.
I use twitter mainly because of the british boyband One Direction and we got ottawa trending on twitter so that's how I know! lol
