I have an HP printer. It came with 61XL ink cartridges. Can I use regular 61 ink cartridges? - Desi - 04-08-2014 04:12 AM

Regular 61 ink is so much cheaper than XL. I am a college student and am always printing papers or notes and other things for school. I am always going through Ink and it is so expensive to keep buying 61XL. So I was wondering if I could use regular 61 cartridges in my printer. Also what is the difference in regular and XL?

My printer is just a regular printer also. It isn't a jet or have a built in scanner. If this helps.

The difference between XL and standard cartridges is that the XL contains more ink. It is at least 1.5 times the amount of ink you would pay for at the same price in the standard one. so it is cheaper to buy the XL since it lasts a lot longer. In fact on mine I appear to be saving about 30 % the cost of printing by buying the XL,

Hello Desi,

Answer to your question yes you can use regular ink then the XL.

XL just has more ink basically.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you!

XL is an extended use cartridge. Read the package to see the page difference between regular and XL. They are interchangeable. Try using store-brand ink (like Staples or sams club - usually cheaper).

If it takes the 61XL, it will take the 61.

The reason there is a difference in price is due to the quantity of ink. The 61 is rated at 190 pages and the 61XL is rated at 480 pages. That's a little over 2 1/2 times the output. As for the color, the 61 tri-color is rated at 165 pages and the 61XL tri-color at 330 pages (about twice the ink).

So the per page price of the XL are generally cheaper than the regular cartridges. It just depends on how much you print and how much money you have at the time of purchase as to what you want to get.
