Specifically a british male, and I was thinking either medical social work or mental health.

Reality is immigrants are needed for the jobs others do no want to accept, a lack of them has caused many smaller companies dependent upon them to fold. At least they are willing to work contribute to the economy and are not on welfare using up our hard earned tax dollars..people need a chance.The USA was built on immigrants,and will continue to need them to stimulate our economy.

To be a social worker you need at least a bachelor's degree, generally in social work (BSW), but some employers will accept a bachelor's degree in another subject such as psychology. It generally takes four years to complete an undergraduate degree program

Rules are identical for citizens & legal permanent residents - need your MSW, etc.
However, if you are talking about the US, thousands of social workers have been laid off due to budget cuts. Many are scrabbling over 3-4 part-time jobs to try to make ends meet. Social workers are a glut on the market.
