Hi Paul, the answer to your question is,

Web Developers are software engineers who code for web applications. In order to create and maintain huge websites like Facebook you need A TEAM of these engineers. It is v.difficult for one single person to handle the entire situation. Also as there is so much traffic, servers are required and to maintain servers Admins are required who are a part of Network engineering.
So although on paper it is possible for a Software engineer specializing in web development to make the NEXT Facebook. The Work Load Highly recommends a team and strategy for success.

Websites are written in a different language to software, which is really the only reason that the distinction between web and software developers exists.

First you'd have to learn PHP or ASP.Net, though PHP is far more commonly used (Facebook, Google and Twitter all use PHP).

So web developers would do a far better job at developing websites than developing software, but there wouldn't be much of a difference if the software developer learned web development.

Of course, this can go both ways, in that a web developer could learn software development and start making software.
