is it illegal to steal a photo? - Lilac - 10-15-2012 08:24 PM

So I have a Facebook page and I upload edits of TV shows and movies and stuff. I put my page name on it. Anyway, someone came and saved all my pictures, cropped my name out, put them up on their FB and claimed that they made them. They're not claiming that they are those people (I'm pretty sure that's illegal) just that they made the photos. Well anyway I contacted the person and they said sorry and gave me credit for all the pictures, but anyway, I was wondering if this is legal?? Like, could someone get into any serious trouble for doing this?

you didn't take the photos in the first place

You only "own" the images if 1) You took the pictures and copyrighted them 2) If you had the pictures made for you and either have rights of publication or have a copyright release from the photographer.
The idea is to protect the rights of the "author" (photographer) although there are exceptions for "fair use". Hopefully these links will help.
