Is this something to do with my Mac, or with the schools network, my VPN service is StrongVPN

I would assume the school has that service blocked, or at least password protected through a user account at the network administrators level.

I think your school have restricted network setting and you are unable to connect.. Though you can ask your vpn provider if he can guide you any setting to run VPN with your mac..

Buy a good VPN.

Whatever you do don't fall for the bogus review on the so called best VPN review sites. They are all scams where the best reviewed VPN's are the ones that pay the review site the most money. Even the customer reviews on these sites are phoney.

Also fancy VPN sites with instant gratification and setup are subject to getting hacked, like purevpn did last month. Customer emails and names were stolen and used by the hackers.

Stick with a company that emphasizes security and network protection.

Virtual machine VPN

I’d suggest a Personal VPN service http://www.surfbouncer.com

Which can be as cheap as 4 bucks a month

I highly recommend using VPNPower to help unblock web-sites. I've been using them since four years. http://is.gd/bestvpnservice
