Am I in need of a wireless router, modem or both? - Nicey L - 04-08-2014 06:23 PM

I already have internet within my home, but I want to get wi-fi. Would I need just a wireless router in order to get wifi? Or possibly would I need just a modem in order to get wifi OR would I need both in order to get wifi?

Wireless router. Has ports for wired plus wifi built in.

I assume you already have a router of some sort with a cable to your computer, if so you will need to buy a wireless router, its just like you current one except it emits a wireless signal, to activate wifi consult user manual.

new router

a modem takes the cable companys cable and turns it into an Ethernet, which can then run to a router for wifi or a pc directly

the router also splits the cable so you can connect multiple pcs with ethernet cables

I would contact your ISP and see if they can give you a wireless modem/router as part of your package.

If they cannot then you can buy a wireless router and use your existing modem. This will send a wireless signal throughout the house.

To get this signal you need a wifi adapter in your laptop or a wifi network adapter installed to your desktop.. You can also still use wires if needed.

Just remember that when you enable wifi on your connection, it will be at even more risk from attacks so you must take advantage of the security options for your connection.
