I am interested in advertising with Google Adwords. How to be sure that I appear on top?

A combination of bid price and quality score, I have seen estimates that the big name businesses constantly appearing on the top position may be bidding less than the newcomers in position #1.
Some have strong opinions that shooting for position #1 is not the most cost effective use of advertising money.
It's easy to quickly lose money with Adwords, seasoned marketers may lose money at first until they optimize the ad copy, keyword selection and landing page combination for sales conversion.
Google provides a lot of quality training material, but it would definitely be worth your while to buy some tutorials as well.
