Obviously it's impossible to say for sure, but could anyone make an educated guess as to the viability of a career in writing in 6 years? I'm just thinking about what I should major in, and it's either writing or some sort of psychology.

There are many types of writing, and while the last 20 years have decimated some (like print journalism), others are flourishing (PR, technical writing). Moreover, excellent writing skills will serve you well in almost any profession. My best advice, if you go the writing route, is to make sure you are very much on top of social media, web and technology -- a growing number of writing jobs are closely tied to those skills.
