I'm curious because I want to check like once a week or two so I can focus on my schoolwork and job.
Does it matter if I only check once in a while that many of my friends list check daily?

As long as your friends know that online social media is not the primary way to contact you, then it's perfectly fine. I know some of my friends that check it several times a day, making it a comparable equivalent to texting or emailing.
However other friends check it very rarely, so I know that other forms of communication might be better.
In all honesty, check it as often as you feel necessary.

I use facebook and instagram everyday. I have a twitter, but twitter is stupid in my opinion.
