Can my school see what I'm doing on my phone if I use their wifi? - marmar - 04-08-2014 07:22 PM

Our school has wifi which I've avoided using since I have unlimited data, but I want to take a new plan and I'm wondering if they see what I do on their network. It's nothing horribly incriminating, mostly stupid juvenile stuff, but not something I want attached to my academic name.

It's reached through logging into our school account if it makes a difference. For my phone I've always had to do it through a browser, but my friends with snazzier phones do it automatically.

Can they see the websites I visit? Can they see the apps I use? Can they see what I do on the apps I use? (e.g. I have a protected twitter account, could they see what I tweet if my password is saved on my phone?)

Thanks!

Yes yes they can.

Yes they can. It's their network they provide for you so they have the right to monitor usage.

Yes, all activity can and will be traced, and if you intend on using it for purposes other than educational, expect to be hit with a bill (at a minimum) and/or charged with an offence (at the most).

Yes, and they can block whatever sites they don't want students on.

As far as I know, if the website you are visiting encrypts the data you exchange with the site, then no one should be able to know what data it was by looking through wifi. However, if the website is not secure (it does not encrypt the data), then there is a chance the data can be seen by others if the wifi network you are using does not encrypt the data either. Famous sites like Twitter and Facebook encrpyt there data as far as I am concerned. Check this out: http://www.onguardonline.gov/articles/0014-tips-using-public-wi-fi-networks
