Hi Richard,
I really have no idea what their using but here is what I think.
I think they use their own servers in their building (the facebook building) to host http://www.facebook.com
So they can buy lots and lots of hdd for their servers to hold Facebook.
Once again, this is just what I think they use, I have no idea what they really use.

They have their own specifically built servers for the website to be hosted.
Each server contains massive hard drives to hold the amount of space their using.
