Is it possible to use my existing Gmail/Yahoo email account when i am connected to a VPN network like hidemyass. If yes what are the additional setting that i need to make to do this. We tried to login to these account when connected to VPN but got the error later that suspicious sign in activity prevented.

It happens because when you use proxy or vpn your IP get changed so you see this error because you signed in before your local IP but it get connected with VPN as well no need any additional setting for this.. Just check the page if he is asking about any confirmation while signing in with VPN just confirm it ...
