I think the item is defective. What should I do?

Contact Amazon. Most sellers on Amazon are covered by Amazon's guarantee/warranty. In some cases Amazon will pay the restocking fee. If someone is selling an item on Amazon that is truly defective you can bet Amazon wants to know about it. At the very least they should help you return the item and get a refund.
