Depends what sort of website it is. If it's an online store, it makes money through sales, if it's an online auction, by auctions, etc.
If you're talking about a standard information website, then it can make money by placing ads on it, you could sign up to google adsense and earn through google.

There are many ways for a website to make money. An e-commerce site (or an online store) sells products. Some sites sell services. Websites such as Facebook sell ads. Many websites use affiliate programs and by advertising for them make money per click, lead, or sell. Websites may charge a membership fee, charge to post an ad like a classified ads site, or charge for access to some kind of premium content.

Hope that helps!

Not trying to be a negative Nancy. But the whole life of a site depends of traffic and not just random tripped over my internet wire and that's how I found your site kinda of traffic. You must have targeted traffic to make money. You don't have to start with a website at all to make money because you can use other website traffic to do so such as youtube or stock photo sites if you're a designer. I put ads in my youtube videos for instance and make money from fulfilling a need. You would still have to be an adsense partner to do this and an adwords account but none the less it works for me.
