I like the look of the mobile site. Your categories could use graphic icons, like a globe for world news, a donkey and an elephant for political news, a circuit for tech. Silhouettes would be perfect for all of these images, just like the talk bubble you have for forums. Maybe little hints of color to break up the gray.
