I've never joined twitter or face book, but am going to and was just wondering what my username should be. Is it meant to include your real name and so on.

The user name on Facebook should be your name and on twitter make it @too_much_swagg or @headturnner__ @mr/missincredible or just simply @(your name or first and last name)

It's depend on your choice. You can use real name or fake name also. But as my opinion if you want to create log in then you should use real name because with real name you can meet with your friends and they can also share information & comment with you.
