if I made one through WIX.COM and changed the site after I learned html would it damage the site's ranking?

Yes. Once you host on WIX you will get some part of his domain authority and will get temporary boost on SERP. Same will happen if you use Blogger or WordPress.
Once you switch to other domain this boost will disappear and your site will drop ranking.
