Migrate Firefox to a new computer? - Heywood - 04-08-2014 08:18 PM

Planning to buy a new computer; how do I carry Firefox and present settings over to a new computer.

I wil ust give you the basic idea, but it has to do with firefox profiles. Your profile folder is located somewhere on your computer and has all the data about your settings in Firefox. The idea is to get that folder, copy it to the new computer somewhere, then tell the newly installed Firefox on the new computer, to use this folder as your main profile.

The name of that folder is usually something like "rt6glz6r.default", in which the 8 first characters could be anything.

I think I found the appropriate Mozilla help page:

Good luck!

If on windows 5.1 (windows xp), 5.0 (windows 2000) and older, you'll have to enable the showing of hidden files in folder options, then navigate to X:\documents and settings\usernamegiven\application data\

Windows 6 (vista), 6.1 (windows 7), 6.2 (windows 8) and 6.3 (windows 8.1): Jump into folder options, enable hidden and system files, navigate to x:\user\users (or username given)\local\ (or \roaming\).

Copy the profile to a USB disk/stick or memory card, then proceed to copying it to that folder on the new computer's hard disk. X:\ is the drive letter where windows installed, since it varies.

Another suggestion is, clean installing windows on the current machine. This will fix everything up, or rather using linux mint if you only use it to surf the internet and all that related stuff. You really don't need to use windows if it's only a few things.
