Links from other sites still improve individual page and overall site ranking, though social signals are an ever increasing ranking factor as well. Anchor text in links can help specific keywords, but take care, they are not that common a natural occurrence, too many anchor text links spell seo spam. Internal anchor text links, like navigation menu links with keywords can be powerful and not considered spam.

Hi,

If you want to increase your ranking for a certain keyword then you should create good contents with the keyword included. If you create good contents that people are looking for and would share, it will help you generate more backlinks which give your website more authority which will increase your ranking.

So what you can do is create content with keywords in it. Share it among your social media followers/friends/fans, email it to your email subscribers and if it is good, you will definitely get visits, link backs and shares. All these will increase your ranking.

In addition, you should do on-page SEO on the keyword that you are targeting. Make sure the keyword is in your URL, Title Tag, Content, H1 header and etc.

Other people have already given you good answers as far as quality content and sharing on social media sites for social signals. But I would also add that if you offer guest blog posts on authority sites related to your website, this will give good quality backlinks which helps with your site credibility and ranking. If the article is really good, other related sites may find your site through the article and link to either your guest post or your website, or both. So you have even more quality backlinks and build your authority reputation further.
