are there any advantages of having a mail.ru account? i mean signing up a website or whatever etc.

Believe the "ru" represents a Russian based top level domain address. Not sure that I'd call it an advantage or not. Guess you'd have to deal with whatever Russian laws are in place for privacy and legal requirements for companies hosted in that country.
