I'm thinking of promoting HostGator (Web Hosting Company) I could make a WordPress site called makemoneyonline.com or whatever domain is available. I have the sales copy that I can upload but how do I get traffic to the site? How do I rank in Google, when everyone else is doing the same thing?

The problem with trying to promote webhosting is that you'll never get to page one on google, then you have to resort to spamming like the different spammers do here when someone asks about webhosting. Then you'll be branded a spammer, and you will be repeatedly reported with abuse.
WIth luck, you'll be reported enough here that your account gets banned.
If you want to go affiliate, find something that's easier to promote. To rank in the top ten for web hosting - took me well over a year. I have a legit web hosting site - THEN you have to keep it there. It's not an easy thing to do.

To answer your question on how to get the traffic to your site, its by the keyword you're choosing to rank for. Instead of going for such a broad keyword like web hosting try different variations of the keyword like : site hosting, web space, affordable web hosting, etc. Just find different variations of your keyword so that you can compete in the search engines and receive a fair amount of traffic.
As far as the traffic goes, you can do social bookmarking, videos, articles, blog commenting, there's so much to choose from. But to help you in this matter I'd suggest using the Google Sniper 2 formula http://tinyurl.com/bc4g9ub

Word of mouth is the best way to market your website. Really you have to have something that people want, you can't trick people into coming to your website but if you get regular traffic people will start coming back. It's better to do it the slow way and build a reputable site, and the more hits your page gets, the higher you rankings will be.
I have the same problem. I've had my site for months and when I search it it's on page 20, even though most the sites above have nothing to do with what I searched!

The best way to promote your affiliate link is via social media sites. create a new page on media sites post daily about your websites and add a links which you want to promote in the post..
