To generate good traffic, the way is - SSC - Social+SEO+Content. In 2013 you need to go behind Quality then Quantity. Quality and honest work can give you huge number of traffic. So as per my personal opinion
- Use Good quality cotent
- Authentic and good quality backlinks
- Need to engage in Social platforms like G+, Twitter, Facebook, Google Community, Stumbleupon, Linkedin, Pinterest etc. These sites can give you good amount of traffic.
- Last but not the least please avoid OOPS, i.e - "Over Optimization Process"

Paid traffic is certainly a good way to get traffic to your site quickly. Surprisingly, Google Adwords has less of the market than you might imagine. Try Bing/Yahoo first. My results have been very good. However, if cash is limited and you're not in so much of a hurry, article marketing can be a great way to help build your profile and establish your site as an expert in your field. I use an article submission site for this as it saves time and the cost is not too bad. Once you understand what they are looking for in terms of style and content, it's easy enough to produce at least an article per week preferably more at first.
Above all you should be trying to encourage visitors to sign up to your list. Your list of opt-in subscribers is the backbone of your business.

Great high quality and relevant content. If you read any of google or bings guidleines you will see that they focus on content for sites. This is important.

Following these simple steps in order will improve your chances to drive traffic.
As you see Monetizing is last for a reason. Most Search Engines don't like a whole lot of affiliate links on your site especially if you are not indexed first.
