Are they charging companies for letting them advertise on there site? Is this the only way they make money?

Basically they way big Internet company's make money is that they rent out small spaces on their Web pages so that smaller companies have a chance at catching people's attention wen they r browsing the Internet for example Google is roughly worth £25 billion its a giant Web company how they have made their money they rent out Web spaces to companies for advertising to the public and Facebook is anthor major company they also rent out Web spaces to small businesses to help them out in a way that's how these companies make their money hopefully that's helped

Everybody will talk about advertising, which is one way they make money, but the less known way is through research. Facebook and other social media can gather millions of points of data and trends (what people 'Like' and 'Share') and then companies bid for this information. Facebook is a research machine and that is why the advertising is also tuned toward content you like and show interest in because you may purchase something eventually.
