Some websites sells premium memberships and such where you can pay to remove the ads. It depends on which kind of website it is. If it's a web shop they obviously get money from what they sell and if it is a news site they would probably be selling memberships to remove the ads.

sell products, sell memberships.
Use it to increase their sign ups and then e-mail those sign ups promoting other products on other websites.
