Does chairty status allow me to knock on people's door and advertise/ask for donations? - harriet - 04-08-2014 09:17 PM

I volunteer at a chairty theatre group. We have charity status so does this allow me to knock on people's doors and advertise future shows and ask for donations?

I don't know what you think "charity status" is, but there is no such legal designation.

It is illegal to solicit money from the public without a state-issued license, and they only give those to valid NONPROFIT CORPORATIONS with 501.c.3 tax exempt status from the IRS.
Each time you ask for money is a violation.
Each violation can get you a $1,000 fine AND a year in jail.

And if the theatre group has a 501.c.3, they may not include door-to-door begging as part of their fundraising strategy.
YOU do not have the authority to do it on your own, without their explicit permission.

Also, many municipalities have rules about door-to-door solicitations.
