i have access to my desktop which has internet but i dont have the wifi password. or can i create a new,separate network somehow?

Not to the same wifi router. (Not without the password for it anyway)

If you haven't secured your network yet then DO IT NOW. Look in the setup information for your router and set a network code. BE SURE TO WRITE IT DOWN. This is the code you need to log your phone into your network. Be sure to change the administrator password as well. WRITE IT DOWN AS WELL.
