Are there any sever hosts that don't advertise their business on your website? - Thomas - 04-08-2014 09:24 PM

I want to create my own website, but I know from experience that most sever hosts advertise their business at the bottom of the web page, which is why I would like to have my own sever, but I not really sure about maintaining it. I'm not really sure how much memory I'd need or how much it would cost to build a custom computer that acts as a sever for storing files and allowing other computers to download stored files over the Internet.

No, if you get professional (paid) hosting. You get to control everything.

If you really need a server DigitalOcean has a great offer, for $5/month you get Virtual Private Server (VPS) with 20 GB of SSD storage and 512 MB of RAM, but this is only for advanced users who can install a server like Ubuntu and some web server like Apache. There are guides available though.

If you need something easier to setup, a shared hosting like iPage is a great solution.

You can get discount links to both and a few others at http://www.webhostingdiscounts.org/

Hi Thomas,

I don't understand why your experience tells you that most server hosts advertise their business on their customers' web pages. I bet you're referring to those web hosts that offer free hosting service.

For ALL professional paid web hosts, there is NO ad on their customers' web pages. Paid web host, in web hosting context means that these web hosting companies or providers do not offer free hosting service.

Since you don't know how to maintain a web server, I bet setting up your own web server is not the option for you. Instead of taking advantage of those free hosting service and whining about having their ads on your web page, why not just go get a paid web hosting service? It costs only less than 10 bucks a month for a start-up.

If you insist on the idea of having your own server, I suggest that you go take a look at this article http://www.websightspy.com/ask/what-is-web-hosting-and-why-do-you-need-it.htm where it shows you a quick run of what you need to do in order to set up your own server. It also provides alternative for you if you feel that setting up your own server is troublesome.

Hope that helps.
