What are they(facebook) planning to do with Whatsapp now that they have bought it for a ridiculous amount?
Remove its real-time chat features and make it a craigslist app?

They bought it to make sure they wouldn't be wiped out by competition, I doubt they would screw it over considering its popularity. Hell, the worst they could do is add a "by Facebook" to the end of the name and replace Facebook Messenger with it. Not to mention possible name and image synchronization.

Totally agree with William. They were afraid of the competition. With just 55 people. WhatsApp was growing much faster.
